Another thing might be to make the letter pretty businesslike, but, if you have to include a picture, make it sort of fun - fun, like "wearing a silly hat." I think the idea is to distinguish yourself by pointing out how you're fun and relate to kids, while not crossing the line into someone who would say/wear/do anything inappropriate, or look like someone who doesn't take the job seriously.

If you want this job in particular, or are desperate for any job at all, then definitely keep it as vanilla as possible. If you're looking for a household that would mesh with your personality and have the luxury to do so, then let your own personality shine through in your letter.
