The "stay away from being cynical and/or ironic" depends on the parents of the kid(s), though, honestly.

If you want this job in particular, or are desperate for any job at all, then definitely keep it as vanilla as possible. If you're looking for a household that would mesh with your personality and have the luxury to do so, then let your own personality shine through in your letter.
